    Medical Expenses over $1,500

For the 2009/2010 year a 20% tax offset is allowed for net medical expenses on the surplus over $1,500 after deducting any reimbursements.

From 1 July 2010, the Government will increase the threshhold above which a taxpayer may claim the 20% net medical expenses tax offset from $1500 to $2000, ad will commence annually indexing the threshhold to the CPI.

The annual tally for medical expenses can be obtained from your chemist, Health Fund or Medicare and should be claimed in your tax return.

The eligible costs include doctor's and dentist's gap charges. Provided the medication or treatment is prescribed, including such items as botox injections, cosmetic surgery and Viagra pills, they may all be claimed.
